Orthoceras ("straight horn") is a genus of extinct nautiloid cephalopod. This genus is sometimes called Orthoceratites. Note it is sometimes misspelled as Orthocera, Orthocerus or Orthoceros.

These are slender, elongate shells with the middle of the body chamber transversely constricted, and a subcentral orthochoanitic siphuncle. The surface is ornamented by a network of fine lirae. Many other very similar species are included under the genus Michelinoceras.

Orthoceras fossils are the remains of an invertebrate, no backbone, that belongs to the Phylum Mollusca. Some examples of Orthoceras fossils animals are snails, slugs, oysters, clams, octopus, and squid.

Origin Of The Name

Originally Orthoceras referred to all nautiloids with a straight-shell, called an "orthocone"

Interesting Facts

Orthoceras can be found in sizes ranging from less than a centimeter to more than 14 feet long. Orthoceras is the ancestor of Ammonites and squids.

Where Is It Found

Orthoceras fossils are common and have a global distribution, occurring in any marine rock, especially limestones. Well-known examples occur in Morocco, Scandinavia, the Alps, and Iowa.

The Baltic island of ™land off the southern coast of Sweden has many quarries that yield orthocone nautiloids of great beauty. For centuries ™land has supplied greater Europe with material for floors, stairs and grave stones. This hard limestone is durable and the fossil inclusions make it very desirable. Occasionally the chambers of the fossil shells are colored differently. The ground water minerals that percolated the strata during diagenesis determines the color. Greens and browns are most common.

What Do We Do With It

Fossilized Orthoceras are commonly used as a pendant and worn around the neck. Plates of fossil orthoceras are used as table tops, bathroom sinks are carved out of block of rock containing the fossil as well as many other ornamental uses.
