Mineral Description
Vesuvianite, also known as idocrase, is a calcium magnesium aluminum silicate found as a green, brown, yellow, or blue mineral.

Vesuvianite was originally was named in 1723 by Moritz Anton Cappeler as, hyacinthus dictus octodecahedricus. A rough translation calls the mineral, ƒ??A hyacinth flower of [octo-decahedron-like shape].

In 1772 it was renamed by Jean-Baptiste Louis Rom?? de Lƒ??Isle as, ƒ??hyacinte du Vesuveƒ?? (Hyacinth flower from Vesuvius). In 1795, German geologistA.G. Werner, renamed the mineral Vesuvianite. A subsequent geologist named the gem-grade version of the stone as Idocrase.

Italy contains numerous localities that have produced exceptional Vesuvianite. The best of them all is Bellecombe, in the Val D’Aosta, which has produced fairly large and lustrous crystals.

It is a zodiac birthstone for Sagittarius and Capricorn, and is often found in jewelry as it makes beautiful birthstone jewelry.
