Mineral Description
The serpentine subgroup (part of the kaolinite-serpentine group) are used as a source of magnesium and as a decorative stone. It is a group of common rock-forming hydrous magnesium iron phyllosilicate ((Mg, Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4) minerals; they may contain minor amounts of other elements including chromium, manganese, cobalt or nickel.

The meaning of the name of this crystal, comes from the Greek word ‘serpens’, meaning snake, because of the way that many pieces of this stone have a similarity to the appearance of snakeskin. It was highly valued by the Aztec civilization. It is a fairly common stone in shades of green to greenish-black, red, brownish-red, brownish-yellow, yellow and white colors.

Many types of serpentine have been used for jewelry and hardstone carving, sometimes under the name New Jade, false jade or Teton jade.
