Mineral Description
Shungite is a black, lustrous, mineraloid discovered in 1879 with high-carbon content first found in Russia near Shunga (in the Lake Onega area of Karelia). Shungite has also been discovered in Austria, India, and Congo. Shungite has been reported to contain trace amounts of fullerenes.

Shungite seems to remove impurities and other organic substances from water. This makes shungite useful for sewage and water treatment, and water treatment at heat power plants. Shungite also seems able to kill bacteria and other germs.

Because of high carbon content, Shungite stones may leave black traces on your skin and clothes. Staining is a natural property of the mineral and can be therefore an additional authenticity sign.

Shungite is one of the few natural minerals that have the ability to conduct electric current.
