Mineral Description
Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as carborundum is a compound of silicon and carbon with chemical formula SiC. It occurs in nature as the extremely rare mineral moissanite which was first found in 1893 as a small component of the Canyon Diablo meteorite in Arizona by Dr. Ferdinand Henri Moissan, for whom the material was named in 1905.

Carborundum is a man made crystal combining silicon and carbon atoms super heated and fused together and as it cool the crystals form. Named by the original manufacturer, Acheson, in 1890, who originally attempted to synthesize artificial diamond, but ended up creating blue crystals of silicon carbide, which he called Carborundum.
