Mineral Description
Perthite is an intergrowth of alkali feldspars consisting of albite, oligoclase, plus orthoclase or microcline. The characteristic texture is produced by unmixing from high temperature. The appearance of the material depends on the cooling history, and hence the relative crystal sizes of the different feldspars in the mixture.

The original feldspar crystallized deep within the crust at high temperatures and pressures as homogeneous crystals. On decreasing temperature (and possibly pressure as the rock rose in the earthƒ??s crust) the original homogeneous crystals unmixed (recrystallized) into two feldspar minerals. In perthite orthoclase or microcline makes up a greater proportion of the specimen than albite

Perthite is named for the locality, Perth, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Thomas Thomson (1773 – 1852), M.D., who named Perthite, was a leading chemist of his day.
