Kidz Rocks sources these pure copper nuggets from a supplier that mines them from the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. Our supplier custom makes these for us without the clear coating. Virtually all other copper nuggets sold by other sellers are coated with a clear spray paint to prevent them from tarnishing green over time as natural copper does.

Who wants clear spray paint coating on their prized mineral specimens? Not me! Only the best products for our customers! A few times a year just use a little copper cleaner to remove the green oxidation or apply your own clear spray coating if desired.

These are perfect to use to wire wrap and make necklace pendants or other craft projects.

You will receive one Copper Nugget from the lot shown in the photos and video that is 2 inch to 2 1/2 inch and weighs 2 to 4 ounce.

NOTE: Most of these have small amounts of oxidation in the deeper cracks and crevasses as can be seen in the listing pictures. When these come out of the ground they are coating with a thick crust of iron oxidation. The mine puts them in a small cement mixer with sand to tumble the stones to remove the oxidation. The oxidation is of course not removed from the deeper cracks and crevasses.

A freshly exposed surface of pure copper has a reddish-orange color.

History, Legend and Lore of Copper use by humans is a long and varied, dating back nearly 10,000 years with multiple applications. Copper is, in fact, humanity’s first metal and shows up in Sumerian and Egyptian metallurgy circa 3900 BC.

Copper has many properties which make it nearly indispensable to modern civilizations. Copper is an essential nutrient to all high plants and animals. In animals, including humans, it is found primarily in the bloodstream, as a co-factor in various enzymes, and in copper-based pigments. In sufficient amounts, copper can be poisonous and even fatal to organisms.

The mines of the Keweenaw native copper deposits of Upper Michigan were major copper producers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and are the largest deposits of native copper in the world. Native Americans mined copper on a small scale at this and many other locations, and evidence exists of copper trading routes throughout North America among native peoples. The first commercial mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula (which is nicknamed the “Copper Country” and “Copper Island”) opened in the 1840s.
