RARE super high quality Davis Creek rainbow obsidian. These are even more stunning when turned in the light.

The rainbow obsidian deposits of Davis Creek, California are the “gemstones” of rainbow obsidian and world famous. In 2018, the US Forest Service shut down all mining at Davis Creek. The only way to get this material is if you are friends with “the guy” that was mining at Davis Creek for 40 years. He has a stockpile he mined before the location was shut down.

You will receive the one specimen from the lot shown in the photos that is 1 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inch and weighing 1 to 2 ounces.

NOTE: “Rainbow Obsidian” is just the name of this type of obsidian. It is given that name because the obsidian is found in every color of the rainbow. It does NOT mean you will receive a stone that has every color of the rainbow in it. Some are solid green, some purple, some orange, some a mix of green and blue, some a mix of 3 colors or 4 colors, etc.

Mineral Description
Rainbow Obsidian usually looks quite black but when polished and exposed to a strong light, it shows bands of beautiful rainbow colors. The color layers are caused by refraction of microscopic bubbles and inclusions such as magnetite.

Obsidian is an igneous rock that forms when molten rock material cools so rapidly that atoms are unable to arrange themselves into a crystalline structure. It is an amorphous material known as a “mineraloid.” The result is a volcanic glass with a smooth uniform texture that breaks with a conchoidal fracture.

The colors are thought to be caused mainly by trace elements or inclusions. Occasionally two colors of obsidian will be swirled together in a single specimen. The most common color combination is black and brown obsidian swirled together – that’s called “mahogany obsidian”

The conchoidal fracture of obsidian causes it to break into pieces with curved surfaces. This type of fracturing can produce rock fragments with very sharp edges. These sharp fragments may have prompted the first use of obsidian by people to make knives and arrowheads.

    So excited to receive this rainbow obsidian rough, since I have been so curious to see what rainbow obsidian rough looked like in person. Each of the four pieces I ordered is so cool! They have rainbows and flash on the smooth surface even in indoor lighting (!), and interestingly, different textures to the rainbow layers. can not really see the rainbow or flash on the rough surfaces, but I can see and feel the different textures of the rainbow layers, which is really cool. they are thin enough that you can see the translucency when held to a light. Great quality pieces and the listing photos were representative of what I received. Love them! Thank you!
