These common red opal specimens are mined in Nevada. This material is vibrant fire engine red and just gorgeous! It literally took me 2 years for the mine owner to be able to mine more material for me. The mine is covered in snow and frozen 6 months of the year.

You will receive one 6 ounce bag of from the lot shown in the photos that are 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch. The rocks in the hand and each bag are 6 ounces.

Mineral Description
Red opal is deposited at a relatively low temperature and may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock, being most commonly found with limonite, sandstone, Rhyolite, marl and basalt. The definition of “Common opal” is a stone that does not exhibit a “play of color”.

Although most of these stones are also “common” in appearance and do not attract commercial attention, some of them are beautiful. This material is given the name “common opal” because it is found in many locations throughout the world. Some people in the trade also call common opal by the name “potch”.
