Owyhee Jasper, also called Wild Horse or Picture Jasper, is a colorful and popular jasper that derives its name from the Owyhee River. It is mined from the rugged Owyhee mountain area situated on the Idaho-Oregon border, just south of Homedale, Idaho.

Owyhee Jasper is found in every color of the rainbow. This one is a tan colors and it is fine grain enough to cut and polish. Some pieces have some beautiful banding in them. The last listing photo is shown wet with water so you can see what it will look like when cut and polished.

You will receive one rock from the lot shown in the listing photos that is 4 inch to 5 inch and weighs 1 pound to 2 pounds.

Mineral Description
Jasper, a form of chalcedony, is an opaque, impure variety of silica, usually red, yellow, brown or green in color; and rarely blue. It can be highly polished and is used for vases, seals, and in jewelry.

Jasper has been used as gemstones and other ornamental objects for thousands of years. In the fourth century, the wearing of green jasper was said to bring rain and to cure snake bites. Jasper amulets were engraved with passages from the Book of the Dead by the ancient Egyptians to procure safe passage for the deceased in the realm of the dead. Some of the earliest primitive stone tools (axes) fashioned by man’s ancestors 2 1/2 million years ago in the Omo valley in Ethiopia.
