Mineral Description
Trilobites, meaning “three lobes”, are a fossil group of extinct marine arachnomorph arthropods that form the class Trilobita. Trilobites form one of the earliest known groups of arthropods. The first appearance of trilobites in the fossil record defines the base of the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period (521 million years ago), and they flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic era before beginning a drawn-out decline to extinction when, during the Devonian, all trilobite orders except the Proetids died out. Trilobites disappeared in the mass extinction at the end of the Permian about 252 million years ago. The trilobites were among the most successful of all early animals, roaming the oceans for over 270 million years.

Over 20,000 species are currently known. Every single continent has yielded trilobite remains. The biggest species (Isotelus rex) was some 28 inches long, while the smallest measured less than a millimeter from end to end. Some sported defensive spines, while others had smooth, rounded shells. And whereas certain trilobites came with disproportionately large eyes, many deep-sea species were blind.

Long before Europeans first set foot on the continent, the Pahvant Ute people, from what is now called Utah, gathered Cambrian trilobites. Believing that the fossils harbored special powers, the natives carried them around as protective charms. These odd, petrified critters were given the name ƒ??Timpe-Konitza-Pachuee,ƒ? or ƒ??little water bug living in a house of stone.ƒ?
